Join Essex Lodge in the Celebration of Salem's 400th Anniversary!
Founded on March 10, 1779, in the midst of the American Revolution, Essex Lodge A.F. & A.M. has stood as part of Salem’s civic life for nearly two and a half centuries. Our first Master, Captain Robert Foster, played a central role in Leslie’s Retreat. His leadership in defending Salem and in establishing this Lodge reflects the city’s early commitment to liberty and self‑government.
From the Revolutionary era through Salem’s rise as a global maritime port, its industrial growth, and its modern renewal, members of Essex Lodge have served as ship captains, merchants, craftsmen, veterans, public officials, and community leaders. Major Joseph Hiller, Revolutionary officer and Collector of the Port of Salem, was among those who guided both the Lodge and the city during its formative years.
For nearly 250 years, our members have helped strengthen Salem’s economy, institutions, and neighborhoods through service, charity, and civic leadership. As Salem marks 400 years, Essex Lodge remains a living thread in its history, committed to fellowship, responsibility, and the continued building of our city’s future.
March alongside the Brothers of Essex in celebration of this important milestone.
