 on March 10, 1779, in the midst of the American Revolution, Essex Lodge A.F
 . &amp; A.M. has stood as part of Salem’s civic life for nearly two and a h
 alf centuries. Our first Master, Captain Robert Foster, played a central ro
 le in Leslie’s Retreat. His leadership in defending Salem and in establishi
 ng this Lodge reflects the city’s early commitment to liberty and self‑gove
 rnment.\nFrom the Revolutionary era through Salem’s rise as a global mariti
 me port, its industrial growth, and its modern renewal, members of Essex Lo
 dge have served as ship captains, merchants, craftsmen, veterans, public of
 ficials, and community leaders. Major Joseph Hiller, Revolutionary officer 
 and Collector of the Port of Salem, was among those who guided both the Lod
 ge and the city during its formative years.\nFor nearly 250 years, our memb
 ers have helped strengthen Salem’s economy, institutions, and neighborhoods
  through service, charity, and civic leadership. As Salem marks 400 years, 
 Essex Lodge remains a living thread in its history, committed to fellowship
 , responsibility, and the continued building of our city’s future.\nMarch a
 longside the Brothers of Essex in celebration of this important milestone.\
 nSome rules from Grand Lodge:\n1. Aprons and collars are allowed for office
 rs. Members are encouraged to wear aprons of their highest rank or white ap
 rons\n2. Pocket Jewels are NOT allowed\n3. Only the Grand Lodge Banner will
  be allowed for this event\n4. Political statements or displays are NOT all
 owed\n5. Officers should be in tuxedos, members in jacket &amp; tie\nThe Sa
 lem 400+ Heritage Days Parade, scheduled for **August 1, 2026**, will be a 
 cornerstone event of Salem's quadricentennial commemoration. This community
 -centered celebration aims to showcase Salem's rich history, diverse cultur
 al heritage, and vision for the future through thoughtful, engaging, and in
 clusive parade entries.\nParade Logistics\nAssembly Area: Salem State Unive
 rsity O'Keefe Sports Complex, 225 Canal St. \nArrival Time: 9:00 AM\nStep-o
 ff Time: 10:00 AM \nRoute Length: Approximately 1.5 miles Detailed maps and
